A Day in Kansas City

A Day in Kansas City
New Generation Society of Lawrence (NGSL members only)

Tue., May. 6, 2003, 8:15am
Location: Kansas City
Our tour will start at the Kaufman Foundation Headquarters at 4801 Rockhill Road. Sherry Gray, from the financial/legal department will give a fifty-minute talk about the various projects and programs this foundation provides for Kansas City. After Sherry?s presentation, we will walk across the street to the beautiful Kaufman Gardens. This lovely spot was created with a generous gift for the city by the Kaufman?s and is maintained by Powell Gardens of Kingsville, MO. Both Mr. and Mrs. Kaufman are buried within the splendor of the garden.

There will be a light lunch at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art at 4420 Warwick Blvd. The current exhibit will be ?Globe Drawings? by Russell Crotty, an artist greatly influenced by astronomy. The exhibit will be from April 11 - July 6. Sharon Louden, an artist from New York, will have an installation using thousands of monofilaments of fine wire entitled ?The Attendees?. You will be free to view these works on your own.

Saving the best for last, we will engage in a talk with Georgia Kline, owner of A Plus Tours. Her subject will be the fountains, sculptures, murals, and other treasures that are a part of the world famous Country Club Plaza of Kansas City. Her presentation will be held as we enjoy lunch in the Kemper Museum. The Plaza was designed in 1922 as the nation?s first suburban shopping center. For a sneak preview, you can go to their website at w.w.w.countryclubplaza.com and click on "Art and History" for a pictorial tour.

We will board the bus with Georgia for a ride past some of the works of art she will have mentioned during her talk. The bus will let us off for an hour of shopping or walking on your own to view your favorite works of art. We plan to start back to Lawrence around 3:30 p.m.
