New Generation Society of Lawrence (NGSL members only)

Tue., Oct. 21, 2003, 8:30am
Location: Bus departs from the Lied Center
The first stop on this exciting day will be at the grand Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We will be allowed to view the ornate structure and design of this building.

Next, we will visit the National Frontier Trails Center. There is a documentary film to view as well as exhibits and artifacts to show the trials and adventures of the pioneers who made the westward trek on the Oregon, Santa Fe and California Trails.

Lunch will be at Stephenson?s Apple Farm. Your choice of hickory-smoked brisket or chicken. The meal includes waldorf salad, potatoes au gratin, entree, hot bread, apple butter, apple pie with brandy sauce and beverage.

In 1870, when Highway 40 (Kansas City, MO) was a mud road, the Stephenson fruit and vegetable farm had its beginnings. From a one-room stone building, homegrown produce was sold to travelers between Lee?s Summit and Independence.

In 1935 the orchard acreage was increased and today the fresh apples, peaches, berries, apple butter and sweet cider served in the restaurant are from these orchards. The first meal was served on April 16, 1946 serving 38 people.

In the afternoon we will visit the Truman Library for a tour. In the Special Exhibition Gallery will be an exhibit called ?Conflict and Consequence: The Korean War and its ?Unsettled Legacy?. Marking the 50th anniversary of the end of the Korean War, this exhibition examines the war with material from the museum and from collections from other institutions and individuals. This exhibit was developed by the Truman Library staff and will run from June 25, 2003 - January 5, 2004.
