Program Description

Dates: May 24-July 18, 2005

Eligibility: Completion of second-semester college German course or equivalent (GERM 108/109). Elibibility for Eutin Intensive German Option (GERM 118): Students enrolled in their first semester of German in the Spring 2005 term and in good standing may qualify to participate in the Eutin Intensive German 118 course.

Credit: Nine hours of credit in German from the University of Kansas (11 credit hours for the Intensive German 118 option).


Courses:
Students enroll in three 3-credit hour classes appropriate to their skill level for a total of nine hours of credit.

GERM 212 Intermediate German I
GERM 216 Intermediate German II
GERM 340 Deutsche Grammatik
GERM 444 German Conversation for Everyday Use

GERM 118: Eutin Intensive German Option. Students enrolled in their first semester of German in the Spring term and in good standing may qualify to participate in the Eutin Intensive German option. Students receive 11 credit hours of GERM 118 (the equivalent of GERM 108, 212, and 216). Students who qualify and elect this option will pay additional tuition for the two additional credit hours.


Program: During a six-week stay with host families in Eutin, students will attend classes, participate in cultural and social events, and experience Northern Germany through a number of excursions to points of interest: Hamburg, Kiel, Schwerin, and Lübeck. Following the institute in Eutin, the group will travel to Berlin, Bamberg, Vienna, Munich, Badenheim, and Mainz.

Cost: Approximately $4,400 for KU or $4,700 for non-KU undergraduates. This price includes all tuition and fees, meals, lodging, cultural events and travel in Germany and Austria as well as administrative cots. Additional costs include the trans-atlantic airfare, insurance, passport fees and incidental personal expenses.

The Lawrence sister city of Eutin (pop. 17,000) is located northwest of Hamburg and midway between Kiel and Lübeck in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein. Students have studied German language, literature, and culture at the KU Summer Language Institute every summer since its founding in 1966. In addition to numerous excursions conducted during and after the program in Eutin, the region offers various cultural and recreational opportunities from musical festivals to water sports, from art museums to architectural marvels.

Financial Aid: KU Students may apply financial aid toward the cost of this program. Limited scholarships are available to KU students. Scholarship applications are available at the Office of Study Abroad. Non-KU students should check into the resources available at their home institutions.
