Advisory Board Member
M.A. Geography (Univ. of Oklahoma), 1987
Please feel free to contact me for career insights.
I attended KU from 1985-1986 to pursue an M.A degree in Geography, with
emphasis in automated mapping and remote sensing. For one year I was a Graduate
Research Assistant at the Kansas Applied Remote Sensing (KARS) program.
I finished my degree at the University of Oklahoma in 1987.
My career started as a research scientist investigating automatic, artificial
intelligence techniques for interpreting satellite imagery. My KU classes
in automated cartography and remote sensing gave me the knowledge and confidence
to work effectively with senior scientists.
Next I worked as a senior scientist for Earth Satellite Corporation, where
I applied GIS and remote sensing principles to environmental mapping and
international development projects. These projects took me all over the
world and the network of geospatial professionals I developed is invaluable.
My interest in digital image processing then led me to be a regional manager
for LizardTech, which was a pioneer in image compression technologies. I
learned the ‘business side’ of the geospatial industry.
Currently I am with Harris Corporation, where I am the geospatial engineering
manager for two of the largest federal mapping contracts ever. For the U.S.
Census Bureau we are correcting the position and address range of the entire
U.S. road network and for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA)
we produce thousands of image, vector and 3D mapping products each year.
I would be happy to share my knowledge of the geospatial industry with
those considering such a career.
