Lisa Chismire
Advisory Board Member B.A. Geography, 1979
Please feel free to contact me for career insights.
I graduated in 1979 from KU with a B.A degree in two majors: Geography
and English, emphasis in cultural geography. I interrupted my geography
education to spend a year at the University of Reading, England where I
studied English as an ad hoc student, worked in a pub, and also for a temporary
work agency. After that, I continued in cultural geography at Penn State
University where I was a teaching assistant for Climatology and Man & Environment;
but I left before getting my master’s degree.
Despite that, my geographic background opened the door to employment at
Amoco International and Shell. There are a lot of maps made in the oil industry
and it often can afford state of the art mapping tools!
I temporarily left the oil industry to go to the University of Texas School
of Law and was hired as an attorney at Conoco, at that time a wholly owned
subsidiary of DuPont. There I worked in the litigation group and handled
many small oil and gas, employment, and commercial cases. Geographic skills
were an asset in oil and gas matters particularly. Later, I continued my
legal work at DuPont handling litigation, acquisitions, and commercial and
business matters for 19 years.
Although my current position no longer has a focus in geography, there
is no doubt that it launched my career and provided me specialized skills
and broad geographic awareness. I have received a lot of benefits and pleasures
from the education I received at KU.
