Tom Schmiedeler grew up in the small German-Catholic community of Tipton in north-central Kansas.  After graduating from high school in 1967, he earned a B.A. degree from St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City.  He then worked on and off for ten years at the Kansas State Grain Inspection in Salina and travelled extensively to Europe and Asia.  In 1981 he entered the geography program at the University of Kansas and earned master’s and Ph.D degrees.  His dissertation was on town form in a six-county region where he grew up and, after expanding the study region to the Midwest, he published several articles on the topic.  He has taught geography courses at Washburn since 1996 including World Regional Geography, Geography of Europe and Kansas Geography.  He is also the Director of the Center for Kansas Studies at Washburn and writes essays for its biannual newsletter Speaking of Kansas, the two most recent of which have been “Kansas in the Outer Hebrides” and “On the Road with Green River Ordinance.”
