APEX
GEAR UP is a federally funded
program (U.S.D.E.) designed to increase the number of students from
low income families who are prepared to enter and succeed in post secondary
education. APEX GEAR UP is unique from other initiatives. This program
supports academic achievement of students attending 3rd to 9th grades
who are residents of the KCK Public Housing complexes.
Educational Talent Search serves
young people in grades six through twelve offering counseling, information
and college admissions requirements, scholarships and various student
financial aid programs.
GEAR UP Programs provide
an array of education services, career exploration activities and other
enrichment opportunities to students who will attend Schlagle, Harmon
High, and Washington High School Clusters in Kansas City, Kansas. The
program works with a student cohort from 7th grade through high school,
with the goal of preparing these students for postsecondary education.
Harvest of Hope Leadership Academy (HHLA) is
a 3 week residential summer program held on the KU campus, whose goal
is to empower and support migrant high school students to increase their
academic success, leadership skills, and college preparation. Accepted
participants receive a full scholarship to include academic enrichment
and leadership development programming, housing and meals, transportation,
and fun recreational/cultural activities. HHLA students will become
familiar with the college environment and increase their confidence and
ability to navigate the steps necessary to successfully complete high
school and enter college.
Math
and Science Center helps students from low-income families strengthen
math and science skills. In addition, students learn computer technology
as well as English, foreign language and study skills. The services
and programs offered by the Math and Science Center allow students to
enhance and sharpen their analytical skills and provide a foundation
for success in math and science fields.
Upward
Bound helps young
students prepare for higher education. Participants receive instruction
in literature, composition, mathematics and science at KU on Saturdays
and during the summer.
