Installing Language Keyboards in Windows 95, 98 and 2000

The instructions below will guide you through the process of installing keyboards for most languages using the Latin alphabet. Those wishing to install keyboards for most Eastern European will first need to install MultiLanguage support before proceeding. Once you have completed this installation, return to this page.

step 1Click the START button in the lower left-hand corner of the screen.  When the Start Menu pops up, move your cursor up to "Settings" and then over to "Control Panel". Click to open the Control Panel window.

When the Control Panel window opens, double-click the "Keyboard" icon to open up the Keyboard Properties control panel

When the Keyboard Properties control panel opens, click on the "Languages" tab. Note that in Windows 2000, this tab has been renamed "Input Locales". Besides the name, the two tabs are identical.
step 3

step 4
Once the Languages (on "Input Locales") tab is open, select the "Add" button. If you make a mistake at any point, you can also use the "Remove" button to delete any unneeded keyboards. Make sure to keep the English (United States) keyboard as the default.

When the "Add Language" window opens, select the language you want from the pull-down menu. Notice that there are often several variants for a single language. Choose carefully and then click OK at the bottom of the window.

step 6
Once you have clicked OK, you will be returned to the Language tab on the Keyboard Properties control panel. Make sure that the keyboards shown are the keyboards that you want. If they are not, select the keyboard(s) which are wrong and then click "Remove". Once you have the correct keyboards selected, click OK.

Depending on the nature of your Windows installation, you may be asked to supply your original Windows 95 or 98 CD to complete the installation of your new keyboard(s). If so, simply insert it into the CD drive and click OK. The installer will find the files it needs on its own.

keyboard iconNote:Once you have installed the keyboard(s), you can switch back and forth between your foreign language and English keyboards by using the indicator in the taskbar. If the dark blue indicator (which by default should read "En" for English) does not appear in the lower left of your screen, reopen the Language tab and make sure that the "Enable indicator on taskbar" box is checked.
