Opening for Information Specialist

The Academic Resource Center at the University of Kansas has an opening for an entry-level technology position with responsibility for troubleshooting and maintaining a variety of technologies used in teaching languages and humanities. These include 75+ workstations in computer labs, 3 servers in Windows and Linux platforms, and a variety of multimedia equipment. Incumbent participates in coordinating the work of the student staff, who help in the day-to-day operation of the center.

Responsibilities of the position:
1) Sets up and maintains computer workstations and software; troubleshoots hardware and software problems; maintains servers for the center and its instructional spaces.
2) Participates in scripting and programming for web-based software and utilities for Center and Center-related faculty projects
3) Assists in training faculty, staff and students in new hardware and software including specialized audio/video/communications software, such as Sony Virtuoso and Soloist software
4) Provides assistance in all areas of the Center's services (supervising student staff, responding to general inquiries, scheduling and circulation of Center's resources, etc.)
5) Researches and recommends new hardware, software and audio/video solutions to meet the Center's needs and to support Center-related faculty projects
6) Researches and implements best practices for computer and network
security; keeps unit within security guidelines set by the university

Required Qualifications:
1) Minimum 12 months of work experience in maintaining computer workstations and troubleshooting hardware and software problems, as evidenced by cover letter/application.
2) Experience in the development of web pages and digital media, as demonstrated by work experience, application and/or URL's.
3) Demonstrated communication skills for interacting with faculty and/or staff, to be addressed in application materials.

Preferred Qualifications:
1) Bachelor's degree in a computer-related or humanities discipline
2) Experience in server operating systems, especially Windows Server 2003 and/or Linux
3) Familiarity with computer and network security issues, especially in a university environment
4) Experience with multimedia software (e.g., Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Flash, Illustrator, Premiere)
5) Experience in web/database integration using MySQL and/or Oracle
6) Knowledge of a foreign language
