Undergraduate Programs

The department of East Asian Languages and Cultures offers a B. A. degree. Students may choose any one these six concentrations:

  1. Chinese language and literature
  2. Japanese language and literature
  3. East Asian Studies with Chinese language
  4. East Asian Studies with Japanese language
  5. East Asian Studies with Korean language
  6. Double Language

The concentrations each require a minimum of 30 or 31 credit hours of junior/senior-level courses (courses listed as 300 or above). *Please note that first and second year language courses do not count toward the major, and third year Japanese consists of JPN 504 and JPN 306 in the first semester, JPN 508 and JPN 310 in the second semester

Requirements for the B.A. Degree:

  1. Chinese Language and Literature Concentration
    At least 31 credit hours of junior/senior-level courses are required:
    CHIN 504-508 Advanced Modern Chinese I & II (10 credits);
    CHIN 342 or CHIN 542 Introduction to Classical Chinese (3);
    CHIN 562 Modern Chinese Literature I (3);
    CHIN 564 Modern Chinese Literature II, CHIN 544 Readings in Classical Chinese, or a course in Chinese linguistics (3);
    ECIV 304 or 305 Eastern Civilizations (3);
    One course in Chinese literature or culture in translation (e.g. EALC 318 Modern Chinese Literature in Translation, EALC 418 Sexual Politics in Dynastic China. This course must be one taught by an EALC faculty member or in an approved study abroad program) (3);
    One course on *premodern (e.g. EALC 415 Ancient China) (3);
    One course on *modern China (e.g. EALC 585 Reform in Contemporary China) (3).
    Notes: The dividing line between premodern and modern China is typically 1911. A course that is cross-regional in scope may be substituted for either the premodern or modern China course (e.g. Buddhism in Asia for premodern China, Entrepreneurship in East Asia or Asian Film for modern China). The Honors Thesis course (EALC 499) may be used to fulfill either of the above marked with *. At least nine hours of content courses must be taken at K.U.
  2. Japanese Language and Literature Concentration
    At least 31 credit hours of junior/senior-level courses are required:
    JPN 306-310 Advanced Japanese Conversation I & II (4 credits);
    JPN 504-508 (Advanced Modern Japanese I & II (6);
    JPN 562 Modern Japanese Texts I (3);
    JPN 564 Modern Japanese Texts II or JPN 569 (Business Japanese), or a course in Japanese linguistics or language pedagogy (3);
    ECIV 304 or 305 Eastern Civilizations (3);
    One course in premodern Japanese literature in translation (e.g. EALC 312 Traditional Japanese Literature in Translation, EALC 575 Love, Sexuality and Gender in Japanese Literature, must be taught by an EALC faculty member or in an approved study abroad program) (3);
    One course in modern Japanese literature in translation (e.g. EALC 316 Modern Japanese Literature in Translation, EALC 410 The Culture of Play in Japan; must be taught by an EALC faculty member or in an approved study abroad program) (3);
    One course on * premodern Japan (e.g. courses in the history, religion or art history) (3);
    One course on *modern Japan (e.g. courses in film studies, history, religion, or art history) (3).
    Notes: JPN 306 and JPN 504 may be taken simultaneously, as may JPN 310 and JPN 508. The dividing line between premodern and modern Japan is typically 1868. A course that is cross-regional in scope may be substituted for either the premodern or modern Japan course (e.g. Buddhism in Asia for premodern Japan, Entrepreneurship in East Asia or Asian Film for modern Japan).   3. East Asian Studies with Chinese language Concentration

    *One course in the humanities on China or East Asia (e.g. film studies, history, religion) (3);
    *One course in a social science discipline on China or East Asia (e.g. anthropology, political science)(3);
    One additional upper-level course in East Asian studies (3);
    One course wholly on an East Asian country other than China (3). 
    Notes: The dividing line between premodern and modern China is typically 1911.  The Honors course EALC 499 may be used to fulfill either of the above marked with *.  At least nine hours of content courses must be taken at K.U.
  4. East Asian Studies with Japanese language Concentration
    At least 31 credit hours of junior/senior-level courses are required: 
    JPN 306-310 Advanced Japanese Conversation I & II (4 credits);
    JPN 504-508 Advanced Modern Japanese I & II (6);
    ECIV 304 or 305 Eastern Civilizations (3);
    One course each on premodern Japan (e.g. EALC 312 Traditional Japanese Literature in Translation, EALC 431 The Samurai) (3); One course on modern Japan (e.g. EALC 316 Traditional Japanese Literature in Translation, EALC 589 Japan since 1945 ) (3); *One course in the humanities on Japan or East Asia (3); *One course in a social science discipline on Japan or East Asia (3); One additional upper-level course in East Asian studies (3); One course wholly on an East Asian country other than Japan (3).   5. East Asian Studies with Korean language Concentration At least 30 credit hours of junior/senior-level courses are required: 
    KOR 504-508 Advanced Modern Korean I & II (6 credits);
    ECIV 304 or 305 (3);
    One course on premodern Korea (e.g. EALC 563 Cultural History of Korea) (3);
    One course on modern Korea (e.g. EALC 593 Modern Korea) (3);
    *One course on East Asia in a discipline in the humanities (3);
    *One course on East Asia in a social science discipline (3);
    Three East Asian studies courses in any field (9). 
    Notes: The dividing line between premodern and modern Korea is typically 1910.  The Honors Thesis course (EALC 499) may be used to fulfill either of the above marked with *.  At least nine hours of content courses must be taken at K.U.
  6. Double Language Concentration
    At least 32 hours of junior/senior level courses are required, or 31 if one of the languages is Korean:
    One year of advanced level language study in each of two languages is required (16 or 20 credits, depending on the languages chosen):
    CHIN 504-508 Advanced Modern Chinese I & II (10 credits)
    and/or JPN 306-310 Advanced Japanese Conversation I & II and JPN 504-508 Advanced Modern Japanese I & II (10 credits)
    and/or KOR 504-508 (6 credits); 
    Two premodern culture courses  (matching the language choices) (6);
    Two modern culture courses (matching the language choices) (6);
    If one of the languages is Korean, the student must take one additional East Asian studies course (3). 
    Notes:  The dividing line between premodern and modern for China is 1911, for Japan it is 1868, and for Korea it is 1910.  At least nine hours of content courses must be taken at K.U.
