A survey of the history of the Middle East from the origins of Islam in the sixth century to the rise and consolidation of the Ottoman Empire in the eighteenth century. Topics include the life of Muhammad, the history of sectarianism in early Islamic history, the formation of the Caliphate and the Islamic empires, cultural, religious, and intellectual trends in the medieval period, and the Mongol invasion and rise of Turkic influence.
