This course introduces students to the practice and methods of the study of history and serves as the gateway to the major. Students learn (1) to think historically; (2) to understand how historians construct and write about the past through narratives, theory and analytical discussion; (3) to critically evaluate historical arguments and the material used to substantiate those arguments, including an introduction to the process of peer review; (4) to develop writing and research skills including the interpretation of primary sources; and (5) to master professional standards of presenting their findings. This course, or HIST 301 - its non-honors equivalent, is required of all history majors and is a prerequisite for HIST 696 Seminar in:________.
