FLAS Fellowships

All qualified undergraduate and graduate students are invited to apply for Academic Year (AY) and Summer (SU) Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships in intensive language study. Graduating seniors who have been accepted into a graduate program may also apply.

Academic Year Fellowships

Undergraduate AY FLAS Fellowships provide up to $10,000 for tuition and a $5,000 stipend. Undergraduate FLAS is available for intermediate and advanced language study only.

Graduate AY FLAS Fellowships offer a $15,000 stipend and cover tuition costs:

  • 12 credit hours (per semester) for KU students enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
  • Up to $18,000 for students enrolled in a KU professional school.

Summer Fellowships

Summer FLAS Fellowships (undergraduate and graduate) provide up to $5,000 for summer tuition and a stipend of $2,500. International travel funds may be available, but are not guaranteed. All tuition amounts are limited to actual tuition charges.

FLAS Description and Requirements

Academic Year

  • Students must be enrolled full-time and their course load must include a CREES approved language course and a CREES approved area studies course each semester.

Summer

  • Language study must be the equivalent of one academic year of modern foreign language study (a minimum of 6 consecutive weeks with 140 contact hours for beginner and intermediate level instruction, and 120 contact hours for advanced level instruction).
  • The student must be at the intermediate or advanced level of language study to use an award for an approved overseas program.
  • Graduate students at the beginning level will be considered for overseas language study if an appropriate equivalent beginning language instruction program in the student's target language is not available in the United States.
  • All programs must include related area studies courses.
  • FLAS Awards may not be used for independent research.

FLAS Eligibility Requirements

Undergraduate
  • U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident.
  • Enrolled (or accepted for enrollment) as a full-time student at KU or at an accredited American institution of higher learning.
  • Studying a CREES approved language at the intermediate or advanced level.

Awards
Show potential for high academic achievement based on indices such as grade point average, class ranking, or similar measures determined by CREES.
Special
Note
Students who already possess language fluency equivalent to educated native speakers in the language for which the award is sought will receive lowest consideration.

FLAS Deadlines

  • 1 February 2012 by 5:00pm: Deadline for submission of applications.
  • Late March to mid-April: Announcement of awards, pending U.S. Department of Education approval.

Summer Programs

KU and NON-KU Students: FLAS Fellowships provide support for students (both KU and non-KU) to attend KU sponsored study abroad programs in Ukraine and in Croatia. For more information about these programs, please go to:

KU Students Only: FLAS Fellowships also provide support for students (KU only) wanting to attend non-KU, Student-Initiated Programs (SIPs). Student-Initiated Programs allow KU students to earn KU credit for programs sponsored by other accredited Universities and Colleges.

Students must confirm that their student-initiated program meets the following Department of Education requirements:

  • a minimum of six consecutive weeks;
  • 140 contact hours, or in-classroom instruction, for beginner and intermediate level instruction;
  • 120 contact hours for advanced level instruction.

For Domestic Summer Programs: contact FLAS Coordinator, Adrienne Landry (alandry@ku.edu) for domestic program approval (domestic SIPs examples: Pittsburgh, Middlebury, Indiana SWSEEL, or Wisconsin CESSI).

For International Summer Programs: All awardees studying abroad must apply to the KU Office of Study Abroad. The following are pre-approved OSA programs for Eastern Europe, Russia, Eurasia, the Baltics and Turkey:

The Office of Study Abroad highly recommends students register by March 1, regardless if they have been approved for a FLAS or not.

Your application should include:

For all FLAS applications:

  1. FLAS application;
  2. Statement of Purpose;
  3. Curriculum vitae or resume;
  4. KU Arts Form (KU students only);
  5. Pre-KU Transcripts;
  6. Three FLAS recommendation forms.

If you are applying for a Study Abroad Program:

  1. Registration with the KU Office of Study Abroad;
  2. Study Abroad Program statement including:
    1. Name of Program and web address;
    2. Total number of weeks of the program;
    3. Total number of hours in language study (contact hours) in the program (must be a minimum of 140 contact hours for beginner and intermediate level and 120 contact hours for advanced);
    4. Projected departure and return date;
    5. Start and end dates of the program;
    6. A paragraph explaining why you have selected the program;
    7. A sample or proposed airline itinerary (your itinerary must comply with the Fly America Act).

Students are encouraged to submit their application electronically.

You may also submit your application and any supporting materials by postal mail. In this case, write your name on the envelope and submit your application to:

It is the student's responsibility to make certain that the application is complete; incomplete applications will not be considered.

The FLAS Selection Committee will review all applications and make decisions in the Spring. Fellows will be notified shortly after.
