Summer FLAS

All qualified graduate students are invited to apply for Summer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships in intensive language study. Graduating seniors who have been accepted into a graduate program may also apply. The award pays tuition, required fees, and a subsistence allowance for room, board, and other personal costs. It may or may not award some portion of international travel costs. All awardees studying abroad must also apply to the KU Office of Study Abroad in Lippincott Hall.
Summer FLAS Fellowships provide support for KU graduate students studying on KU programs and approved non-KU programs (such as Pittsburgh, Indiana SWSEEL, ACTR, CIEE), and for non-KU graduate students studying on KU-originating programs in St. Petersburg, L'viv, Zadar, and Krakow.

Eligibility

  • Enrolled in a program of graduate study at an accredited American institution of higher learning;
  • Study in Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian, Czech, Polish, Russian, Slovene, Turkish, or Ukrainian language at the intermediate and advanced levels. Students who already possess language fluency equivalent to educated native speakers in the language for which the award is sought receive lowest consideration;

  • U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status.
