Sources of Financial Support Available Through CREES and the University of Kansas

There are sources of funding - fellowships and assistantships - for which REES MA students are eligible.

CREES-administered funding:
Prospective students may indicate their interest in being considered for these grants by checking the appropriate place on the CREES Application Cover Sheet.  For the FLAS grant, they should add the required additional materials (see below) to the application packet they send to CREES.

Current KU graduate students may indicate their interest in these grants by applying directly to CREES.

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships (Entering and current students).
CREES offers nine academic year and eight or more summer Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships.   These fellowships provide tuition and a living stipend to recipients, who must be engaged in formal study of the designated language and world area.  Federal guidelines restrict recipients to US citizens and permanent residents, and discourage awards to native speakers and students at the dissertation stage of their studies.

Summer FLAS: Summer Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships for graduate students. Eligibility, deadlines, and application process.

These are one-time awards for $1000/$1500,  Applicants should demonstrate their proposed project's relevance for international relations, diplomacy, or conflict resolution. Funding administered by other units at the University of Kansas:
US Department of Education, Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Program (Advanced graduate students)
This program supports research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies. It is an entirely separate grant from those administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE) in New York. Candidates must be doctoral candidates who will have completed all requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation.  Applicants submit their applications to their universities, who then decide which ones to send forward.  For applications and more details, contact Hodgie Bricke at the Office of International Programs, 301 Strong Hall, 864-6161.
