Academic Year FLAS

All qualified graduate students at the University of Kansas are invited to apply for Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships to pursue their study of the Russian, East European and Eurasian world area. All awards are contingent upon availability of federal funding.
The AY FLAS Fellowship provides a fixed stipend and pays KU tuition and fees covering approximately 24 credit hours over the course of the academic year.

Eligibility

  • Enrollment in a KU graduate program combining modern foreign language training with area or international studies; or with the international aspects of professional and other fields of study;
  • Study in Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian, Polish, Russian, Slovene, Turkish, or Ukrainian;
  • Applications from all disciplines and professional schools welcome;
  • U.S. citizenship or permanent resident status.
  • Please Note: Students who possess language fluency equivalent to educated native speakers in the language for which the award is sought receive lowest consideration.

AY FLAS Deadlines

  • January 30th, 5:00pm: Deadline for submission of applications for the following academic year;
  • Late March to mid-April: announcement of awards, pending confirmation of funding from the U.S. Department of Education.

Students may request application packets from Bill London in the Center for Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies or download the form (current or applying students). Submit completed application packets and all supporting materials to the Center Office:

It is the student's responsibility to make certain that the application is complete; incomplete applications will not be considered. The FLAS Selection Committee will examine all applications and take final action in accordance with Department of Education guidelines.
