Post Grad Jobs

The time to think about the job search should be immediately upon entry to the program, unless you are going to go on for a PhD (which has its own, specific job search preparation process).

CREES sponsors a Job Search Workshop on jobseeking in the Russian, East European and Eurasian area every other year. The materials and evaluation exercises from the workshop are available to any REES student. CREES invites you to make an appointment with the advisor who can put you in touch with REES alumni, and they will direct you to other resources as well as provide personal consultations on job search strategies. KU also has a very savvy University Career and Employment Services Office. They are located in 110 Burge Union and assist with everything from researching positions to creating resumes to providing mock interviews. You will regularly receive announcements of openings in the field on the REES student listserv. In addition, check the bulletin board outside the REES office for additional employment opportunities, or the Job Opportunities page on this web site.

Some things to think about:

  • Job searching is hard, time-consuming work.
  • The sooner you start, the more effective your search will be.
  • Getting a full-time job is a full-time job.
  • Only you can get yourself a job.
  • You will never walk into your dream job first off.
  • Job hunting is a process of building from position to position until you get to where you want to be.
Be prepared to examine yourself, your abilities, and your expectations very critically. Ask yourself the following questions:
  • What are my expectations?
  • What are my short-term and long-term goals?
  • What are my qualifications and do they fit my goals?
  • What is my strategy?
