Season Highlights 2001-2002
The KU debate squad enjoyed a very successful first semester in the 2001-02 season winning 3 tournaments and reaching the elimination rounds of every tournament attended. The success is very significant given that the entire squad is composed of first and second year debaters.
Sophomores Sara Apel and Melanie Wilson have continued the success they began last year when they cleared at the NDT. This year they have reached the elimination rounds of every tournament in which they have competed. They began the season with a 6-2 record at the University of Northern Iowa but lost in the first elimination round. They had a similar performance at Kentucky with a 6-2 record and a 2-1 loss in the first elimination round. At their next tournament at Catholic University they were 4-2 in prelims and won the first elimination round before losing to Harvard. At the University of Central Oklahoma they were 4-2 in preliminaries and advanced to the quarters before losing to Emory. At Wake Forest they were 4-2 in preliminary rounds, knocked off the 6th seed from Texas in the doubles, and lost a 2-1 decision in the octafinals.
Other young teams have enjoyed success as well. Sophomores Todd Jordan and Jordan Tinsley went undefeated at the Macalester tournament, defeating Iowa in the finals. Sophomores Erick Robinson and Jason Gill took third place at the Macalester tournament. Sophomore Sam Korab won the junior division of the Johnson County Community College tournament, and frosh Erik Skoglund and Kristen White won the junior division at the University of Texas at Dallas and reached the semifinals at the University of Central Oklahoma.
