KU Debate Camp
Registration for the 2010 Institute has begun, forms are available below!
The KU Campus
The Jayhawk Debate Institute at the University of Kansas is a premier high school debate camp providing first class instruction at an exceptional value. The JDI offers students of all levels of debate experience the opportunity to further their development through a low student-to-staff ratio and interaction with exceptional faculty. Over the history of the JDI, students attending the camp have garnered strong competitive records at national and regional competitions.
The Jayhawk Debate Institute will occur this year on the following dates:
- Three-week extended policy debate: June 20-July 10, 2009
- Two-week policy debate : June 20- July 3, 2009
- 2009 Coaches' Workshop: TBA
The Jayhawk Debate Institute is an attractive camp for several reasons!
-
Low tuition: Tuition covers basic student expenses during the workshop: room, board, instruction, evidence, and library borrowing privileges. Included in tuition is access to Watkins Health Center, one of the top university health facilities, for all minor medical needs. You may be wondering why tuition slightly increased this year; this is to cover the costs for each student. The price of the camp has not increased in many years, but our costs have. Dorm rates and meal plans have increased, and the old tuition prices were not covering camp expenses. However, our tuition is still lower than most comparable camps, and when you include travel costs and everything included in tuition, you will find KU to be the best option for your money.
With Room & Board Without Room & Board 2 week $1300 $800 3 week $1600 $1000 Coaches Workshop N/A $50 (Sign up using the registration form below)
-
Easy travel: KU's proximity to Kansas City International Airport (KCI) makes flights less expensive than to many locations. Several shuttle and limousine services can deliver students to the front door of the residence hall. More information can be found on the Frequently Asked Questions page.
-
Low student-staff ratio: All labs at the institute are guaranteed to have a student-to-staff ratio of no greater than 8:1. Research and work time is supervised by institute staff to facilitate students' progress
-
Proven Record: Over the past several years, students attending the Jayhawk Debate Institute have returned strong competitive records in national and regional competitions.
- Great Residence Halls: All students stay in air-conditioned rooms. The dormitory housing staff provides 24-hour security in all residence halls, with staffed entries and roving security patrols. Meals are served in the dining commons, which provides a variety of service options, including pizza, pasta, sandwiches, and an extensive salad bar. This year the institute will be held in its entirety in Ellsworth Hall. This is the most newly renovated dorm on campus, and will provide a comfortable location for this years JDI and JEDI. Watch here for residence hall updates. Information about the specific dorm we will be housed in will come closer to camp.
How to Register
Registration has changed! Our old process of registration has changed. You should follow these steps.
- Fill out the medical forms and mail it into us with a $100 check. This check will serve as a placeholder for your space in the dorms and as your key deposit when you get to camp. We will NOT DEPOSIT this check. If your student keeps track of their key and does not damage any campus property then you will get this exact check back on check out day. Commuters do not need to send a deposit since they will not be staying on campus. Commuters should still send in the registration form.
- After we receive the form you will receive an email confirming your acceptance to the camp and it will contain: a receipt showing that you have paid your key deposit and still owe tuition for the camp option you chose and a link to the next set of forms you will need to fill out.
- At any point after you send in the basic information form you should begin to fill out the medical and consent forms for the camp (insert link to medical forms here). If you have been to our camp before then you are used to mailing those in. DO NOT MAIL THESE FORMS. Please have them completed and bring them with you to registration. Also note that one of the forms needs to be notarized.
- You will also bring a check for the entire among of tuition to registration on June 20.
Summary of Changes

Therefore, the directors of this camp are also involved in coaching our college debate team, attending graduate school, and teaching class. As such it is difficult for us to keep normal business hours during the semester. We will check the email everyday – thus EMAIL IS THE BEST WAY TO CONTACT US
