Students in Communication Studies (SCS)

Students in Communication Studies (SCS) is a self-governed peer organization. The club is associated with the Department of Communication Studies at The University of Kansas, but is not limited to admitted majors.
Membership Requirements
GPA Requirement

Membership in Students in Communication Studies is inclusive. Aiming to be a club which provides support and helps students to be successful, the club does not select members in relation to GPA. SCS welcomes all current and future COMS students, as well as any KU students with a general interest in communication studies, to participate.

Commitment Requirement

In order to be considered a Member in Good Standing/Active Member, attendance is required at 2 meetings of SCS per semester plus 25% of the functions. One may be a member of SCS without being an Active Member.

Time Requirement

Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month to discuss new business, upcoming events, club operation, etc. SCS members will be reminded of dates for these meetings well in advance and are encouraged to attend and bring in new members. Meetings are typically held at 7:00pm in the Kansas Union.

Peer Support

SCS offers two major services available only to club members: The Online Internship Database Index and The Online Book Exchange Forum. The Internship Database is the digital representation of Dr. Michael Dennis' intership files, compiled through years of cooperation with students and organizations. The book exchange forum allows users to post contact information and list the author's name and title of the book he/she either wants or wants to sell. The Forum caps all sales at 50% of the retail value of the item posted. Both sites are secure and password protected.

Additionally, as a member of Students in Communication Studies you are surrounded by peers with comprehensive academic experience, both in communication studies and general studies. Each SCS member is both a recipient and a provider of academic advice and peer support.

Faculty Advising

Though all communication studies students are able to make use of the Department of Communication Studies staff, being a member of SCS gives you an advantage. As a member of SCS you come to be known by the department and as a result develop more than the average student-professor relationship. Faculty take a special interest in advising SCS members in regards to collegiate and professional endeavors.
