Undergraduate Information


Requirements for the Major:
  1. Completion of COMS 130 or a waiver (see below).
    COMS majors should NOT take COMS 150.
  2. An additional 30 hours of course work that satisfy a, b, c, and d below.
    1. Research Methods (both courses required).
      COMS 235 COMS 356 (must be admitted to
      the major prior to enrolling)
    2. Communication Theory (two courses from the following).
      COMS 244 COMS 246 COMS 310 COMS 320 COMS 332
    3. Skill (two courses from the following).
      either COMS 330 or COMS 331 (or both)
      COMS 342 COMS 344 COMS 231 (3 hours)
      COMS 548 COMS 605
    4. Electives:
      12 hours of COMS electives (200 level or above and/or COMS 104)

COMS 130 fulfills the general education requirement in Argument and Reason. Students may be exempted from this requirement (but will not earn credit) if they meet one of the following conditions:

  1. Students with two high school courses (totaling one full credit) in speech or debate with a grade of B or higher in both are exempt. Take official high school transcripts to the Department of Communication Studies, 102 Bailey Hall. The exemption is noted on each student's record.
  2. Students may take the COMS 130 exemption exam.Link to the Coms 130 Exemption page for more information.
