Residence Requirements

Doctor of Philosophy - The student must spend in residence at this University at least one full academic year (summer session excluded) subsequent to the Master's degree, and be enrolled as a full-time graduate student (12 credit hours per semester), nine (9) credit hours if holding a half-time assistantship. In all, the student must spend the equivalent of three full academic years of graduate study at this or some other approved university, including the time spent in attaining the Master's degree.


Time Limits

Master of Arts - Credit toward the Master's degree is valid for only seven years.

Doctor of Philosophy - A student who enters the Graduate School with a Bachelor's degree has four years to pass his/her comprehensive examinations and a total of eight years to complete all degree requirements. A student who completed the Master's degree at the University of Kansas and subsequently begins doctoral studies will have a total of ten years to complete both degrees. A student who enters the Graduate School with a Master's degree has three years to pass his/her comprehensive examinations and a total of six years to complete all degree requirements.
