Overall Hours and GPA

This area contains the student's cumulative GPA and hours for all courses. This total is also broken down, depending upon school needs. For example, Total Hours could be broken down by Non-Residential Hours, Junior-Senior Hours, LA&S Hours, etc. The area on the right sometimes contains additional transcript information, for students with very long transcripts.

Total Hours:
Represents the minimum number of total hours a student must have to graduate.
Jr/Sr Hrs Req:
Represents the minimum number of Jr/Sr hours a student must have to graduate.
Total CLAS Hrs:
The total number of hours
Total Hours Needed:
Should equal the number of transfer hours (graded A-C) plus the number of KU (A-D) hours. Note: hours enrolled for current semester are NOT included in this number.
Jr/Sr Hrs Completed:
The total number of Jr/Sr hours that have been successfully completed.
Transfer Hrs:
The number of hours transferred to KU.
Calculated KU GPA
This is the GPA
Jr/Sr Hrs Needed
Represents the number of Jr/Sr hours that need to be completed in order for a student to graduate.
KU Hrs in Res:
Represents the minimum number of Jr/Sr hours a student completed at KU.

General Education Requirements

English
A student must enroll the first semester at KU in the English composition course appropriate for their placement and must continue to take English courses until completion of ENGL 102, Composition and Literature (or ENGL 105, the honors equivalent).
Oral Comm/Logic:
Students with two high school courses (totaling one full credit) in speech or debate with a grade of "B" or better in both may apply for exemption by taking a copy of the high school transcript to the Communication Studies department, 102 Bailey Hall.
Mathematics:
No later than the second semester in CLAS, all students must enroll in the math course appropriate for their level of preparation (see placement chart on page 57 of the undergraduate catalog) and must continue to take mathematics courses until they have completed Math 101, Algebra OR Math 104, Precalculus. Students who demonstrate eligibility to enroll directly in calculus through ACT, SAT, or placement test scores are exempt from this early and continuous enrollment requirement but not from the mathematics requirement.
Western Civilization:
Students are advised to complete ENGL 101 and 102 before enrolling in HWC 114/204 and 115/205, Western Civilization I and II. This course is not open to freshmen (level 1) except members of the Honors Program.
Principal Course Distribution:
The BA requires three courses, each from different subtopics. A BGS requires two courses, each from different subtopics.

Additional General Education Requirements

Bachelor of Arts (BA)
A BA requires that one of the three required Nat Sci/Math courses have a lab. Also, the BA requires that a student reach the fourth level of proficiency in one foreign language. http://www.ku.edu/~language
Bachelor of General Studies (BGS)
The BGS requires neither a natural science lab nor a foreign language. Student's pursuing a BGS can choose either to complete a junior/senior concentration which requires 9 hours of 300+ level classes in a department outside of the student's major or a minor totaling at least 18 hours in a department outside of the student's major.

Major Requirements (*Unique to each major)

This section of the ARTS form is unique to the major that has been declared. They will not all look the same. At the top of the section the hours and GPA that has been obtained in the major are listed. The rest of the section shows the required courses for that particular major and how the courses that have been taken fulfill the different requirements. Any questions pertaining to this section should be directly adressed to an advisor in the department which offers that major.

Transcript Area.

Whenever possible, transfer work will be coded as the equivalent KU department and course number. Otherwise, transferred courses have a letter code in place of the course number. Courses that do not transfer to KU will not appear on the ARTS form. KU does not accept courses that are remedial, vocational, or technical in nature. If a transfer course satisfies a general education requirement, it will be listed in section B on the ARTS form just as KU courses are listed.

J Appearing at the right of course grade signifies Junior/Senior level course
2,4 or F Appearing at the right of Transfer credit came from a 2 or 4 year or foreign institution & between hours and grade Remedial Course.

The CLAS ARTS form tracks requirements for those students who plan to graduate with a BA or BGS degree in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. If you plan to complete a BS (Bachelor of Science) or if you have a preprofessional academic interest (for example pre-business, pre-journalism, pre-education) or if you have been admitted to a professional school, your degree requirements may not coincide with this ARTS form.
