How Standing is Determined
Academic Standing for each undergraduate in the College is evaluated at the
end of every academic term.
A student's standing is based on KU cumulative grade point average and credit hours attempted. This GPA includes all KU credit hours graded A, B, C, D, or F. KU credit hours graded W, WP, WF, I, S, U, CR, NC, or P are not used to determine attempted hours). Grades and credit hours earned at other colleges or universities are not part of the grade-point average or attempted hours.
A student is considered in good standing if he or she maintains a cumulative
KU GPA of 2.0 or better. If a student falls below a KU cumulative GPA of 2.0,
the student is placed on academic probation.
Good Standing:
A student is in good standing if he or she maintains a cumulative KU GPA
of 2.0 or better.
Probation:
The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences reviews all students at the end of
both the fall and spring semester and summer term to determine their academic
standing. Students in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences must maintain
a 2.0 cumulative KU GPA in order to be in good academic standing. Students
below the cumulative KU GPA of 2.0 are placed on probation.
Freshman and Sophomores on Probation (between 0 – 59 completed hours)
Each student in this category must earn a 2.0 term GPA until his or her cumulative
KU GPA reaches 2.0, returning the student to good academic standing. Students
who fail to meet the above requirements will be dismissed.
Juniors and Seniors on Probation (60 or more completed hours)
Each student in this category must earn a 2.5 term GPA until his or her cumulative
KU GPA reaches 2.0, returning the student to good academic standing. Students
who fail to meet the above requirements will be dismissed.
Readmission after a College Dismissal (0 or more completed hours)
Each student in this category must earn a 2.5 term GPA until his or her cumulative
KU GPA reaches 2.0, returning the student to good academic standing. Students
who fail to meet the above requirements will be dismissed for a second or
third time. A third dismissal is final.
In order to return to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences the student must follow the CLA&S readmission requirements.
Dismissal:
Students should review their semester record closely. This can be checked through your KU Portal. If an error is found in the posted grades, please contact the instructor for the course immediately. The sooner that a grade correction occurs, the sooner enrollment in upcoming terms can be addressed. Changes to grades must be reflected on a student’s record by 5:00 p.m. on the day before classes start in order for students to continue for that academic term.
A student that has been dismissed should first evaluate their performance and determine whether they believe there were circumstances beyond their control that significantly impacted their ability to meet the established probation criteria .
Students should notify the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences as soon as
possible if critical information (potential grade changes or personal situations)
should be considered in our assessment of your academic progress in the academic
term. Please complete the readmission
petition by the Friday before classes
start in order to be considered for that academic term. Students that have
been away from KU for at least one Fall or Spring semester will also need to
apply for readmission at www.admissions.ku.edu.
A third dismissal is final.
