Joseph E. Steinmetz assumed the position of Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas on July 1, 2006. He holds faculty appointments in the Department of Psychology and the Department of Molecular Bioscience and in 2007 was selected as a University Distinguished Professor. Prior to coming to KU, Dean Steinmetz was at Indiana University where he was the Eleanor Cox Riggs Professor of Psychology. At IU, Steinmetz served as the Chair of Psychology and Executive Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences. He also held the rank of Distinguished Professor of Psychological and Brain Sciences.
Dean Steinmetz’s research interests are in the general area of behavioral neuroscience. He is interested in how the mammalian brain encodes simple associative learning and memory tasks. He has published over 170 papers, 4 books, and made over 160 presentations at conferences, research meetings, and institutions of higher education. His research program has received consistent external funding from federal agencies and private companies. Steinmetz was recognized in 1996 by the National Academy of Science for his early career contributions to behavioral neuroscience when he was selected for the Troland Research Award. He has been elected to fellow status by the American Psychological Association and the Association for Psychological Science and in 2005 was elected a member of the elite Society of Experimental Psychologists. He also received the 2000 Distinguished Faculty Award from the Indiana University College Alumni Association and was honored with the 2006 Distinguished Alumni Award from Central Michigan University.
Dean Steinmetz received a B.S (1977) and M.A. (1979) in Experimental Psychology from Central Michigan University and a Ph.D. (1983) in Experimental Psychology from Ohio University. He also was a postdoctoral scholar at Stanford University before joining the faculty at Indiana University in 1987.
