Undergraduate Program
The Department offers the B.A. (Bachelor of Arts) and the B.G.S. (Bachelor of General Studies) in either two main concentrations: African Studies or African-American Studies. Other possible concentrations for the major are either: African and African-American Studies or Haitian Studies. The Department also offers the minor in five tracks: African-American Studies, African and African-American Studies, African Language, African Studies, and Haitian Studies.

Minors
For students whose programs make it attractive and feasible for them to focus on an African or American region, country, or topic, the Department provides a minor. Four tracks are offered:
I. African-American Studies Track
- AAAS 106 The Black Experience in the Americas
- AAAS 306 The Black Experience in the US Since Emancipation
- 12 additional hours of African-American (USA) related AAAS courses at the 300 level or above.
II. African and African-American Studies Track
- AAAS 105 Introduction to African History
- AAAS 106 The Black Experience in the Americas
- 12 additional hours of AAAS courses at the 300 level or above.
III. African Studies Track
- Option 1: Advanced African Language Study
(For those who have completed the 4-semester language requirement or have an approved equivalent language proficiency)
- 3 credit hours (one course) in AAAS 103 or 105
- 12 additional credit hours (four courses) at the 300 level or above in one of the following languages: Amharic, Arabic, Hausa, KiSwahili, or Wolof (see catalog for listed courses)
- One course from AAAS 550, 695, 690, 496
- Option 2: African Societies and Civilizations
- 3 credit hours (one course) in AAAS 103 or 105
- 12 credit hours (four courses) at the 300 level or above (see catalog for listed courses)

- Option 3: African Arts and Literature
- 3 credit hours (one course) in AAAS 103 or 105
- 12 credit hours (four courses) at the 300 level or above (see catalog for listed courses)

- 3 credit hours (one course) in AAAS 103 or 105

- 3 credit hours (one course) in AAAS 103 or 105
