The Air Force ROTC detachment at the University of Kansas is designed to help individuals become the leaders of tomorrow's Air Force.
AFROTC is divided into two groups of cadets, GMC (General Military Course) and POC (Professional Officer Corps). Freshmen and sophomore cadets are members of the GMC. In between the sophomore and junior year, most cadets attend a four-week course called Field Training. Cadets in a 2.5 - 3 year program attend a six week Field Training.
After Field Training, cadets contract and become members of the POC (Professional Officer Corps). With this membership comes the responsibility of training new cadets and filling leadership positions in the cadet wing. Upon graduation POC cadets are commissioned as Second Lieutenants.
Detachment 280 can be found in the Military Science Building on the KU campus. There are approximately 60 Air Force ROTC cadets in the Detachment. Det 280 keeps very busy in the community with service projects, color guards, and Veteran's Day Ceremonies. In addition, cadets have opportunities to learn about the Air Force through base visits and orientation flights.
