AEC 082: Classroom Communication for International Teaching Assistants
Students wishing to become Teaching Assistants are encouraged to take AEC 082: Classroom Communication for International Teaching Assistants, which focuses on improving students' communication skills in the classroom, as well as professional and social settings.
Students meet with the instructor for an individual tutorial for 45 minutes per week and participate in one or more discussion sections each week with native speakers to improve their fluency. They attend a Pronunciation Seminar that focuses on factors influencing a student's comprehensibility in English, and they attend a Classroom Expectations Seminar that highlights cultural expectations in the classroom and examines teaching and presentation techniques. Students deliver six videotaped mini-lectures or presentations during the semester, which are attended and evaluated by KU undergraduates. Students also receive feedback from the course instructor and are required to perform self-evaluations for these mini-lectures.
Enrollment is limited to graduate students or to seniors close to graduation who have completed all AEC requirements (except ESLP 126 or ESLP 128.) Students wishing to enroll in this course must receive permission from the AEC. For further information on this course, contact Howard Pollock at hpollock@ku.edu, or 1-785-864-4606.
