Council approves self-study language
on ethics, adopts Appeals Board recommendation
At the Sept. 1 Council meeting in Chicago, Jerry Ceppos presented additional language about ethics to include in the self-studies. A year ago in September, the Council named an Ethics Committee to consider ways schools might focus on and improve ethics instruction and learning in accredited schools.
The Council approved a motion that the following language be included in the self-studies for two years:
Regarding ethics education, we know that units deal with the subject in different ways. Among the possible information that units might include in the self-study are responses to the following questions:
1) How does each graduate learn ethical behavior?
2) Are ethics courses required for graduates?
3) How does the unit deal with students and faculty members accused of ethical problems?
4) If the teaching of ethics is part of other courses, how is it included?
5) Do visiting speakers discuss ethics?
6) If an ethical issue is in the news, which classes discuss it, and how?
7) How do you evaluate your performance in ethics education and, if it needs improvement, what are your plans?
The Finance Committee will meet at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 23 in advance of the March 2007 Accrediting Committee meeting to discuss dues paid by organizations and those paid by minority organizations. Finance Committee members are Will Norton, chair, Jerry Ceppos, Peggy Dotson, public member, and Beth Barnes.
In other business, the Council accepted the Appeals Board recommendation for a re-visit to Hampton University. Charles Edwards, Jr., dean of journalism at Drake University, presented the Appeals Board recommendation. The Council agreed that the School will do a new self-study and have another site visit, to take place February 18-21. Other members of the Appeals Board were Merrill Rose, independent public relations consultant, New York City, and Charles Elmore, Jr., chair, department of mass communications, Savannah State University.

The Council wll meet Friday, May 4, at the Westin Hotel in Portland, Ore., to review and make accreditation decisions for the schools visited during the 2006-07 year. They will meet on Saturday morning, May 5, to discuss other Council business. Hotel information will be sent to members in March.
New Appeals Board
Doug Anderson, dean of the College of Communications at Pennsylvania State University, will chair this year's Appeals Board. Other members are Caesar Andrews, executive editor at the Detroit Free Press, and Maria Russell, professor, school of public communications at Syracuse University.
Graduate reviews now accredited separately
Those schools who have invited ACEJMC to examine their graduate programs will, for the first time, receive a separate accreditation recommendation by the visiting teams. Visiting teams will write specific information in the report on the graduate program for each of the nine standards and will make a separate recommendation for compliance and non-compliance for each standard.
