KU School of Music celebrates anniversary of composer Franz Liszt?s birth with A Liszt Odyssey
The KU School of Music is pleased to present A Liszt Odyssey, September 11-13, 2011. This festival is set to become one of the most memorable and visible Liszt festivals in the world as it will feature Alan Walker, the world?s greatest authority on Liszt, and composer Mohammed Fairouz and his world premiere of The Last Resistance, a work created specifically for the festival.

The KU choir will travel April 19-21 to Burlington, Marion, Hutchinson, Greensburg, Meade, Garden City and WaKeeney. All concerts are free and open to the public.

KU music student selected as finalist for the International Trumpet Guild student competition
Peixiang (Vincent) Li has been selected as one of three finalists for one of the major student competitions for the International Trumpet Guild. He will perform in the final competition in Sydney next July and be honored at the banquet. The top prize is $1,000. Li studies with Professor Steve Leisring.

KU's Helianthus Ensemble to perform spring concert
The Helianthus Ensemble, a student ensemble dedicated to the performance of contemporary music, will perform spring concerts at 4:30pm and 7:30pm on Saturday, April 17, 2010, in The Commons/Spooner Hall.

Music student named semi-finalist in international competition
Bo Atlas has been named a semi-finalist in the Artist Division of the ITEA Solo Tuba competition, an international competition sponsored by the International Tuba Euphonium Association. Bo will compete in the semi-final round in Arizona in May. Bo is a junior in tuba performance and is Principal Tuba in the Topeka Symphony. He is also a winner of the Great Plains Conference Solo Competition in 2009 and is a student of Professor Scott Watson.

International Trumpet Guild awards KU music student
Guangyu Dong has been awarded a competitive scholarship for the International Trumpet Guild 2010 competition based on a CD recording Dong entered. He will be recognized at the banquet in Sydney in July. Only a handful of students are chosen and recognized for this honor. Dong studies with Professor Leisring.

KU music student selected as international finalist for the Gilberto Gagliardi Trombone Competition
Brian Scarborough, an undergraduate music student, is one of three international finalists for the Gilberto Gagliardi Trombone Competition, sponsored by the International Trombone Association. Brian will go to the ITA convention this July in Austin, TX, to compete. Judges include a first-call Los Angeles studio musician, the second trombonist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Principal Trombonist of the RAI Orchestra of Torino, Italy. Brian is a student of Professor Michael Davidson.

312th Army Band selects music students as newest members
David Ferneau is the newest member of the trombone section in the 312th Army Band, Lawrence, KS. Brett Bohmann recently won a spot on the Army National Guard 35th Infantry Division Band based in Olathe, KS. David and Brett both study with Professor Davidson.

KU Brass and Percussion presents master class featuring Mark Inouye
Mark Inouye, Principal Trumpet of the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra will give a master class, free of charge and open to the public, in the Kansas City area at the KU Edwards Campus next Monday, April 12th.

KU Symphony Orchestra spring concert features Professor Ji Hye Jung
The KU Symphony Orchestra will perform a spring concert on Tuesday, April 6, 2010, at the Lied Center of Kansas. This concert is at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $7/gen admission and $5/student and seniors. Tickets can be purchased through the Lied Center Box Office at lied.ku.edu or 785-864-2787.

The University of Kansas School of Music commencement convocation is scheduled for Saturday, May 15, 2010, 10:30 a.m., at the Lied Center of Kansas. The school is pleased to announce the guest speaker for the School of Music?s inaugural year's commencement ceremony will be KU Chancellor Bernadette Gray-Little.

Joyce Castle celebrates 40 years in opera
Joyce Castle, professor of voice/opera and Grammy award-winning mezzo soprano, is celebrating he0r 40th year in opera this year. The Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, William Bolcom, has written The Hawthorn Tree for Castle to be performed in NYC, Washington, D.C., Fort Worth, TX, as well as Lawrence, KS at the Lied Center in January of 2011.

KU doctoral student invited to perform at NYC music festival
Mary Elizabeth Thompson, DMA candidate in flute performance studying with Professor David Fedele, has been invited to perform for the New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival in New York City on March 25, 2010 at City University of New York. She will perform Ariel for flute, alto flute, and tape by Jorge Sosa with Kansas City flutist Rebecca Ashe.

Professor Kip Haaheim takes part in Spooner Hall program and concert
Professor Kip Haaheim (music composition) will take part in a program entitled "Nature's Mix: Dialogue in the Round" at The Commons, Spooner Hall, on March 31, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. This event will be a discussion about food sovereignty, the relationship between natural habitat and agriculture, and the importance of working with rural social movements to promote ecological sustainability.

Professor David Neely selected to conduct for the Des Moines Metro Opera
David Neely, Director of Orchestral Activities and KU Symphony Orchestra conductor, has been chosen to conduct "Figaro" and "Macbeth" for the Des Moines Metro Opera during this year's season, scheduled from June 25 through July 18, 2010. After nearly four decades on the podium, the Des Moines Metro Opera founder and artistic director Robert Larsen will step down. During the two-year transition period, Larsen will oversee a series of veterans chosen to conduct the opera's productions, including Neely.

Ph.D. candidate receives national Pedagogy award
Kathy Kessler Price (Ph.D. Candidate Music Education/Vocal Pedagogy) received a 2010 National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Voice Pedagogy Award, one of only two such awards presented this year.

KU Brass & Percussion Master Series presents upcoming events free and open to the public
Robert van Sice is considered one of the world's foremost performers of contemporary music for percussion and he is also one of the world's most respected percussion teachers. Mr. van Sice teaches at the Yale University School of Music, Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University and the Curtis Institute of Music. He will be in residency at KU March 7th and 8th. His residency will include a class on marimba, chamber music and percussion master classes.

KU School of Music groups to perform at KMEA conference
KU's School of Music presents numerous performing groups at this year's upcoming KMEA conference in Wichita, KS, including: KU's Flute Choir, KU Double Reed Ensemble, KU's Trombone Choir, The Kansas Woodwinds and KU;s Symphony Orchestra. These groups will perform during the conference, Feb. 25-26, 2010.

Ho Ni Connie Mak won with her performance of the first movement of "Concerto in A Minor, Op. 16" by Edvard Grieg.
