Piano professor to study with renowned pianist
Steven Spooner, KU assistant professor of piano, is the winner of an Ivory Classics Foundation Grant. This grant is given to outstanding young pianists to provide free study, travel and lodging to study with distinguished American pianist Earl Wild. Wild is a Grammy-winning pianist known for his interpretations of Romantic-period composers, such as Liszt. He is now 93 years old.

Piano professor named as a Steinway artist
Steven Spooner, KU assistant professor of piano, recently joined the distinguished list of international concert pianists as an official Steinway artist.

Design students & professor receive awards
KU design students were successful in the 2008 Dallas Society of Visual Communications/DSVC National Student Show and Conference, taking home numerous awards. A KU design professor also took home the prestigious 2008 Golden Apple Award, the DSVC’s version of the “Teacher of the Year” award.

KU SFA welcomes new interim dean
On July 1, the KU School of Fine Arts will welcome a new interim dean.  John L. Gronbeck-Tedesco will serve as dean of the KU School of Fine Arts during the 2008-2009 school year, taking over for Steven K. Hedden, who will return to the fine arts faculty after serving five years as dean.

Textiles student wins $15,000 grant
Stephanie Grebel Sato, an undergraduate student studying textiles, was recently named a recipient of the 2008 Windgate Foundation Fellowship Award. These fellowships are administered by The Center for Craft, Creativity and Design at the University of North Carolina in Hendersonville. Only ten Fellows were selected from a pool of almost 90 national applicants.

KU Youth Chorus presents spring concert
The KU Youth Chorus (KUYC), comprised of singers grades 4-8 from the Lawrence area, will present an informal concert on Thursday, May 8, at 5:00 p.m. in room 328, Murphy Hall. The youth chorus will present a variety of literature and demonstrate new music skills.

KU voice professor and alumna to perform
The Department of Music & Dance in the School of Fine Arts is pleased to present a recital by Joyce Castle, mezzo soprano and KU professor of voice, in Crafton-Preyer Theatre on Thursday, April 24, 2008, at 7:30 p.m. Castle will be accompanied on piano by Mark Ferrell, Music Director of the KU Opera.

Music & Dance welcomes notable Yale professor
The KU Department of Music & Dance welcomes Daniel Harrison, the Allen Forte professor of music theory and chair of the Department of Music at Yale University, to KU Thursday and Friday, April 24-25, 2008. Harrison will visit KU to give two music lectures at Murphy Hall.

Music student wins second Book Collecting contest
For the second year in a row, Bailey Pike, a junior studying musicology, has taken home first place in the undergraduate division of the Snyder Book Collecting Contest. This contest is organized by the KU Libraries and Oread Books and is open to all currently enrolled KU students.

Doctoral student is finalist for music fellowship
Michael Kirkendoll, a doctoral student in piano at the University of Kansas, was recently named one of five finalists for the American Pianists Association Classical Fellowship Awards.

Graduate student’s public art to be displayed
Sarah Kephart, a master’s student in sculpture at the University of Kansas, was recently selected as one of six winners in the Kansas City, Mo., Municipal Art Commission’s Avenue of the Arts project.

Art Department to hold Scholarship Exhibition
Scholarship Exhibition May 4-6 in the gallery of the A&D Building. The A&D Gallery is located on the 4th floor. An opening reception will be held May 4 from 2-4pm and the exhibition will be open from May 4-6 (it closes at 12noon on the 6th). The show will feature student works nominated by the art department faculty for scholarship and awards in 2008-2009. The show is free and open to the public.

Music & Dance, jazz studies present My Fair Lady
The Department of Music & Dance and the division of jazz studies is pleased to present John Williams’ “My Fair Lady” on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at 7:00 p.m. at the Lied Center of Kansas. The concert will feature renowned guest musicians Gary Foster and Steve Houghton and is part of Festival of the Arts, a month-long celebration dedicated to Murphy Hall’s 50th anniversary.

Concerts pay tribute to the late Elizabeth Sherbon
The University Dance Company will continue the celebration of Murphy Hall’s 50th anniversary and will pay tribute to dance legend Elizabeth Sherbon with performances on April 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Lied Center of Kansas. Featured in these performances will be the works of solo tap artist and choreographer Bill Evans and choreographer Karole Armitage, a Lawrence native.
