What Is EndNote?

EndNote is a software tool that helps researchers gather, manage, and cite references to scholarly literature and materials (such as journal articles, books, maps, reports, artwork, etc.). For more information about EndNote and other reference management tools available at KU, see www.lib.ku.edu/technology/citing.

Available versions and features

KU currently supports EndNote X1 and recommends this version for all users. This version is compatible with Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, and Mac OS X (10.3.9 and higher, including 10.5.x). The Cite While You Write feature is compatible with Microsoft Word 2000, XP, 2003, 2004 (Mac) and 2007. However, EndNote is not currently compatible with Word 2008 (Mac). Libraries created in EndNote X or X1 will work in either version of EndNote.

NOTE: Those who have upgraded to EndNote X1 on Windows XP and Vista may now update their version to EndNote X1.0.1. Instructions for installing the update can be found at the bottom of their page.

  • If EndNote X1 is installed on a personally-owned computer, we recommend that you update from within EndNote by selecting “EndNote Program Updates” from the Help menu.
  • For KU-owned computers we recommend that you contact your department's technical support staff for assistance in installing the update. If your workstation is supported by LAN Support Services, please contact them directly at 864-0400 or email lsshelp@ku.edu.

For discussion of new features and how to download and install the update page, please review the information at www.endnote.com

New: EndNote Web

EndNote Web works similarly to EndNote but your library is stored remotely. Although not as robust as EndNote, EndNote Web makes an excellent complement to your local installation of EndNote particularly when it comes to sharing your resources with others or when working in multiple locations. For more information go to www.endnoteweb.com.
