Our Function

The Max Kade Center at the University of Kansas

  • Provides a forum for literary, artistic, historical, and musical events that document the role of German-speaking immigrants in the development of American culture, and, in particular, the contributions of German-speaking refugees from Nazi oppression in the formation of twentieth-century American culture.
  • Encourages the active use of its resources by faculty, visiting scholars, and students by sponsoring classes, seminars, and conferences in connection with its collection.

  • Is establishing and maintaining for scholarly use collections of the artistic and scientific products of German-speaking intellectuals exiled by political oppression in the 1848 era and in the era of the Nazi Holocaust.
  • Sponsors research that is preserving the rapidly disappearing cultural and linguistic heritage of German-speaking minorities in the American Middle West, and making the materials available on the Internet for world-wide access by scholars.
  • Sponsors research that is creating an Internet-accessible version of the American travel narratives of Alexander von Humboldt. The design of a Humboldt digital library envisions a unique edition of the explorer's observations on the basis of interdisciplinary and international cooperation.
  • Sponsors a combined language-and-business educational program that prepares KU students for careers in multinational business through a combination of achieving fluency in German, obtaining competency in business, and the experience of internships in multinational firms.
