University fellowships:
the department annually nominates incoming and continuing
graduate students for a variety of university fellowships.
For information about these fellowships, consult the graduate
catalogue or go the Graduate
School site. (Most are available only to U.S. citizens.)
Morris Family Scholarship:
one scholarship is awarded each year to an incoming doctoral
student. Holders of the Morris Family Scholarship receive
$10,000 and a Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) postion in
their first year. Upon successful completion of this year,
Morris scholars will be given priority for either a GTA position
or an internship in the Spencer Museum in the following two
years. (Because of the teaching component of this scholarship,
recipients must be native speakers of English.)
Foreign Language
and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships for the study of Chinese,
Japanese, and Korean are offered by the Center
for East Asian Studies. Application is made directly to
the center. (FLAS Fellowships are available only to U.S. citizens.)
Direct Exchange
Programs: the University of Kansas participates in a number
of direct exchange programs with institutions abroad. These
provide tuition and living expenses at the host institutions.

Graduate Teaching
Assistant (GTA) positions in art history are available
to students in Asian art history. Generally, these positions
are held by students who have completed at least a year of
the M.A. program. History of Art graduate students also teach
in the Eastern Civlization Program adminsitered by Department
of East Asian Languages and Cultures.
Graduate Research
Assistant (GRA) positions are offered primarily in the
History of Art slide and digital resource library.
One curatorial intern
position in East Asian art is offered by the Spencer Museum
of Art. Students interested in an internship are advised
to take HA 710, Museums Techniques and Functions, before applying.
The Laurence Sickman
Scholarship in Chinese Art (approximatedly $1000) is awarded
annually to an outstanding student in Chinese art.
Travel grants for
doctoral research (up to $1500) are available from the
Art History Travel Fund.
Small grants to support
travel to present papers at conferences are available from
the department and the university.
The department regrets
that no financial support is available to incoming international
students.
