M.A. Program
Requirements:
- 30 units of graduate credit, which must
include:
- A balanced distribution of graduate level
(500 level or above) courses in Chinese and Japanese art history.
At least one course in Korean art, if available, is recommended.
- At least one course in the history of
Western art. This requirement may be satisfied by any college
level Western art history course. However, any course numbered
below 500 will not count toward the 30 hours required for
the M.A. degree.
- Five seminars, two of which must be numbered
800 or higher. Advising: Dr. Amy McNair at 785-864-4713
- A reading knowledge of Chinese or Japanese.
This requirement may be met several ways:
- By passing a proficiency examination given
by the department.
- By completing the fourth semester course
in the language with a grade of B or better.
- For native speakers of Chinese or Japanese,
this requirement may be met by English proficiency demonstrated
either through the TOEFL or the completion of coursework in
the Applied English Center (AEC) at KU.
- Passing the Master's general examination.
This examination, usually taken after the fourth semester of course
work, tests the student's general knowledge of Asian art history,
not just material covered in specific classes. Although the focus
of the program is on East Asia, students are expected to know
the basic history of Buddhist art in India and Southeast Asia.
Advising
The graduate adviser is Dr. John Pultz. Specific
