KU Graduate Studies Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Minimum undergraduate Grade Point Average of 3.0 (for regular admission status)
- For international applicants, proof of English proficiency as demonstrated by one of the following:
- Official scores from the TOEFL or IELTS. Below are the minimum scores for regular admission status (test must have been taken within the last two years)
- Internet-based TOEFL: all parts at least 20
- Computer-based TOEFL: all parts at least 20
- Paper-based TOEFL: all parts at least 53
- IELTS: overall band score at least 6.0 and all individual band scores at least 5.5
- Verification that applicant is a native speaker of English from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, an English-speaking province of Canada, or an English-speaking Caribbean country.
- Graduation with a baccalaureate degree or higher earned in residence from an accredited U.S. institution of higher education or from such an institution in one of the countries listed above whose medium of instruction is English. This does not apply to degrees earned online.
- Graduation with a baccalaureate degree or higher from a program taught in English at an international institution. Verification of English instruction from the university is required as part of the application and can be from a catalog or program description brochure or an official letter from a department chair, dean, or other university official stipulating English as the language of instruction. The applicant must also complete a telephone interview with a KU representative.
Department Requirements
Admission to the graduate program in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology is based on background, preparation, test scores, and prior academic performance. A graduate student in ecology and evolutionary biology should have a broad undergraduate background in natural science and math, including calculus, physics, chemistry, population biology, organismal biology, and genetics. Deficiencies can be made up during the first year of graduate study
The Graduate Admissions Committee for the Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (EEB) Department has not set minimum criteria for admission because these depend to some extent on the quality of all our applicants in any year. Listed below are the qualifications successful applicants have had.
- Successful applicants have had the following average GRE scores:
- Verbal/Quantitative aggregate = 1200
- Analytical Writing = 4.5
- 3.2 or higher undergraduate Grade Point Average (GPA)
